The Right Side of the Tracks
Posted on March 9th, 2010 by Nate

Driving back to the office the other day, coming down Airport Way South I caught a glimpse of something amazing … Barely visible, behind a row of trailers on the other side of the train tracks was a bizarre art installation, or maybe it was a hobo’s living room, I’m not sure. Along the tracks, against the huge cement retaining wall, someone had placed an old leather sofa, and hung a series of art pieces. The whole thing was almost reminiscent of the set of “All in the Family” or you could imagine this being the drunken roost of the “Shit My Dad Says” guy, where he watches the world go by and spews his filthy pontifications.

The artwork was an interesting combination of folk art, Duchamp-esque collages and Nagel/Mondrian mash-ups all framed and fastened to the wall behind the couch. Around the torn and wet sofa was a respectable amount of empty 24oz beer cans, implying that the scene has seen its fair share of action and good times. I can imagine on a hot summer night  (after the couch has dried out a little bit) a long after hours hang-out session with some old friends, drinking cheap beer and yelling at trains. It sounds awesome actually, ruling out any territorial brawls with hobos or hopped up vagrant Juggalos of course.

UPDATE!
It turns out that the folks behind this installation are an Art Collective called “We Are Fucking Awesome”. They are up to some amazing stuff and you should do yourself a favor and check them out here.

Also, the installation has since been completely removed. Not a trace is left. Shame on institutional art haters!
